Sepang Formula One Circuit Information

General

So what makes the Sepang Formula 1 GP racing circuit so special? Firstly, its unique architecture, totally blends modern technology with the Malaysian culture. Secondly, it is user-friendly, spectator-friendly and very challenging for the racing drivers. This Formula One circuit can accommodate a total of 130,000 spectators, with 30,000 in the unique double-frontage Mall Grandstand. A stunning "Tower" Grandstand, nestling at the tip of this V-shaped Main Grandstand features a roof, which looks similar to the Malaysian national flower, the hibiscus. As the Formula 1 circuit has been built in a stadium-type location, with the track recessed in a valley, you can most of the time, see 50% of it irrespective of where you sit. Sepang has become a favourite among the teams, drivers, media and fans alike; purpose built for the 1999 season, when new standards were set in Formula One GP facilities and circuit layout.

What the drivers say

Malaysia is a very technical Formula 1 GP circuit, putting tremendous demands on the drivers and their cars. There is usually a reasonable expectation of thunder-storms during the race, so the teams will have to consider compromising their race set-up in order to react to the rain, should it arrive. This would involve softening springs, running fuller tanks to improve flexibility, and some compromises to the aerodynamics. At Sepang the teams usually undertake a two-stop strategy due to the oppressive heat. The high temperatures and humidity are the two key factors that can affect performances here. These two factors place high stress levels on both the engines and the drivers over the course of the weekend. Traditionally, the circuit is tough on tyres, because it requires a near-maximum downforce set-up. The Sepang Formula 1 Circuit is, without a doubt, a very challenging and demanding, but a great racing circuit.
